Efforts to Reduce Environmental Impact
The Alfresa Group’s main environmental impact comes from the electricity used in offices, plants, and distribution centers, and the vehicle fuel used by our marketing specialists (MS) and delivery staff to visit medical institutions or deliver pharmaceuticals. This makes up nearly 90% of our overall energy usage.
Switch to Fuel-Efficient Vehicles and Promotion of Eco-Driving
The Group is introducing fuel-efficient vehicles, such as switching to light motor vehicles and hybrid cars. In addition, we have fitted fuel-efficient tires and implemented ecological, safe driving such as soft acceleration and steady speed travelling in an effort to reduce CO2 emissions and raise awareness around safe driving.
Implementing Electricity-Saving Measures
The Group is working to reduce electricity usage by ascertaining the amount of power it uses and raising awareness of saving electricity, as well as converting to LED lighting at its distribution centers and so forth.
In its efforts to reduce waste, the Group strives to reuse paperboard from product packaging as a recycled resource by compacting it with a specialized machine and selling it to a service operator. This helps to reduce both waste-processing expenses and environmental impact.
Continuing World-Class Initiatives at Lush Green "Plant Park"
[Alfresa Fine Chemical Corporation Akita Plant]
Located on a spacious 258,000m2 site that is nestled in the coastal area of Akita City amid lush green forests, Alfresa Fine Chemical Corporation is working on environmental activities and strives to achieve zero emissions goals with the motto “environmental conservation in harmony with the natural environment.”
The high-concentration waste liquid containing fluorine which is discharged during the manufacturing process is made harmless through a variety of processes, and the sludge produced in these processes is recycled as a raw material for fluorine. Sludge such as activated charcoal produced in the manufacturing of products is also recycled into cement materials after off-site fuel processing. In addition, wastewater from the plant is sent to a fishery pond, where water quality is monitored constantly using a telemeter before water is discharged into waterways. In fiscal 2016, the plant introduced a high-efficiency cold water refrigerator (heat pump), resulting in an annual reduction in CO2 emissions of about 300 tons. Attendance at training on the environment, safety and disaster prevention is compulsory for employees when they join the corporation. The corporation acquired ISO 14001 certification in 2000 to implement environmental management in line with international standards. Moreover, it has concluded a pollution prevention agreement with Akita City to contribute to conserving the local environment. Going forward, the plant will continue to develop its environmental initiatives in order to respect and coexist with the lush local environment.
